Melissa's Story
I'm not sure if anyone will read this but I found that the profile questions really didn't convey anything about me or my life these days. I'm living near San Luis Obispo in what I consider one of the most beautiful areas of the state of California, and there are so many. My husband, Kevan, and I married in 1998 and moved to SLO County in 2000. We have a home on 10 acres with 3 horses, 2 dogs, 3 cats (2 outdoor, 1 indoor), and 7 (+ or -) chickens and were blessed in 2005 with a little boy, Kurtis, who is the joy of our lives.
I've been blessed in other ways, too. I work from my home for an environmental consulting company and my mother is "Nanny Granny" (a title she created!) to Kurtis. Becoming a mom has completely flipped my life from career-oriented to family-oriented and I wish I didn't have to work at all, even after spending a lot of money and time in higher education to further my career. But being a parent is so much more important to me than what I do. So as long as I can make a decent wage, I'll compromise...Expand for more
position for parental flexibility any day.
Since our little man was born, many of my activities have taken a back seat. I still try to get out and ride one of my three horses on occasion but, while I have a home-made arena, I'd much rather be riding in the hills around Lake Nacimiento or Santa Margarita Lake, along the creeks and through the oak trees. That takes more time, though, and lately my time outside generally consists of walking with Kurtis while he rides his pint-sized John Deere or explores the seasonal creek that runs through our horse pasture. I'm so glad he likes being outside, even though he's not riding horses with me (yet!).
I hope everyone who reads this is happy with where they are in life. I know in my life I've taken a few turns on two wheels but I'm squarely on all four now and moving forward. While I don't have much time left after working all day and spending time with family, I would like to hear from others from Tracy High, Class of '84 and will try to write back to anyone who writes to me.
